18TH STREET REMODEL - BOULDER, COLORADO

Built in 1958, this single story ranch sits in the neighborhoods of central Boulder, and features many of the aspects of mid 20th Century residential architecture. Pel-Ona Architects and Urbanists were hired to design a remodel of the first story space and add a second level with multiple decks to take advantage of westerly views across Boulder. The new design had to be a functional and flexible plan for comfortable living, working at home, and accommodate for large gatherings.

The proposed plan keeps much of the existing footprint of the original building, aiming to preserve as much exterior framing as possible, while expanding slightly into the patio area. The first floor features a large open kitchen connected to a double height dining room, a mud room, large living room with a bar and patio connectivity and a guest bedroom/at-home office.

The elevation features two main forms. The majority of the house has a single, mono-pitched roof, with the southern face of the building being taller. The second element is the garage/master bedroom form, where the original brick is kept and faced with stucco, and features a flat parapet roof over the bedroom.
