Project Description

Pel-Ona Architects & Urbanists provided architectural and construction administration services for the remodel of the existing green room in Boulder’s historic Chautauqua Auditorium and the creation of an additional second-floor green room.

The Auditorium, a wood-framed structure constructed in 1898 for the first season of the Colorado Chautauqua, has long served as a venue for lectures, musical performances and motion pictures. The former green room served as a private space for the performers but lacked modern amenities. The project included new interior framing, stairs, heating/cooling, insulation, electrical upgrades, and plumbing for a seasonal bathroom on each level.

Modifications to the main level occur behind existing walls and within the area that was formerly used as a green room. The addition of second floor green rooms creates flexible backstage environment capable of supporting performances with multiple acts. Improvements on the upper level are largely screened from public view by the existing acoustic reflectors.

The plan went through the City of Boulder’s Landmarks Design Review Committee process and received a Landmark Alteration Certificate.
