This project called for the sensitive rehabilitation of the former Boulder Daily Herald Building, a two-story historic building in downtown Boulder, transforming it into vibrant retail spaces and professional offices. The historic facade and rear elevation, including the stairwell, were thoughtfully redesigned to align with Boulder’s Downtown Design Guidelines. The renovation also featured updates to the main floor tenant finishes and the replacement of second floor windows on the front facade with energy-efficient glazing to meet current energy codes. This project successfully navigated Boulder’s Historic Preservation processes and was honored with the 2017 City of Boulder’s Historic Preservation Award.

In the “existing front elevation” above, the recessed main level entry and exterior stairs to the lower level created a dysfunctional and historically incompatible building front.
